Specialised Psychotherapist in Wrexham

Hi, I’m Emma – A Specialised Psychotherapist in Wrexham

Hi, I’m Emma, a specialised Psychotherapist in Wrexham with over 15 years of experience supporting people through emotional and psychological difficulties. My journey in mental health has taken me through various roles, from working in local authority services and community mental health teams to supporting young people in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). Most recently, I worked within the NHS as a Psychotherapist, helping individuals process trauma, anxiety, and depression.

I set up MindKey Therapy to provide a dedicated, professional, and compassionate space where people can work through their difficulties at their own pace. I understand that life can be overwhelming, especially when past experiences, distressing memories, or ongoing anxiety make it hard to move forward. My role is to help you make sense of these challenges, process your thoughts and emotions, and develop practical tools to improve your well-being.

I work with individuals who are struggling with:

  • Trauma and PTSD – Whether you have experienced a single traumatic event or ongoing adversity, trauma can have a lasting impact on your emotions, thoughts, and sense of safety. Therapy can help you process and reduce distressing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance.
  • Anxiety and overthinking – If you find yourself constantly worrying, feeling on edge, or struggling with intrusive thoughts, we can work together to help you develop strategies to regain control.
  • Depression and low mood – When life feels heavy, motivation is low, and negative thoughts dominate, it can be difficult to see a way forward. Therapy can help you identify patterns, shift unhelpful thinking, and build positive coping mechanisms.
  • Emotional distress and overwhelm – If you feel disconnected, numb, or unable to enjoy the present, we can explore ways to bring balance and clarity into your life.

How Therapy Can Help

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, which is why I offer a range of evidence-based interventions. The techniques I use are recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), meaning they have been researched and proven to be effective in treating psychological distress. Depending on your needs, therapy may involve:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – A structured and goal-oriented approach that helps you identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and change behaviours that may be keeping you stuck.
  • Trauma-Focused CBT – A more specialised form of CBT designed for individuals who have experienced trauma. It helps process distressing memories, reduce their emotional impact, and regain a sense of control.
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – A powerful therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic experiences, reducing their emotional intensity and making them feel less overwhelming. EMDR can be particularly effective for PTSD and distressing memories.
  • Narrative Exposure Therapy – A structured method that helps individuals who have experienced multiple traumas make sense of their life story and reduce the emotional impact of past events.

Therapy is a collaborative process. You won’t just be talking about your struggles – you’ll be learning new ways to manage them, change how they affect you, and take practical steps toward a better quality of life.

My Training and Professional Background

I am committed to continuous learning and professional development to ensure I offer the highest standard of care. My qualifications include:

  • EMDR Training (Levels 1, 2 & 3) – Advanced training in trauma therapy to support individuals in processing distressing memories.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in High-Intensity CBT – Hull University, specialising in cognitive behavioural therapy techniques for anxiety and depression.
  • Master’s Degree in Criminology – Glyndŵr University, providing insight into behavioural patterns and the impact of trauma on individuals.
  • Degree in Social Work – Glyndŵr University, equipping me with a strong foundation in mental health support and psychological well-being.

I am an accredited member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), meaning I adhere to high ethical and professional standards in my practice.

What to Expect from Therapy

It’s completely normal to feel nervous about starting therapy, especially if you’ve never had therapy before. You might be wondering if it will work for you, what the sessions will involve, or whether you’ll feel comfortable opening up. My approach is warm, compassionate, and non-judgemental, ensuring you feel safe and supported throughout the process.

Some of the common challenges people bring to therapy include:

  • Feeling stuck – Knowing something isn’t right but not being sure how to change it.
  • Struggling with intrusive thoughts – Constantly battling negative or distressing thoughts that seem impossible to control.
  • Overwhelming anxiety – Feeling constantly on edge, panicky, or unable to switch off.
  • Reliving the past – Flashbacks, nightmares, or a sense that a past event is still affecting your daily life.
  • Disconnection – Feeling numb, detached, or unable to enjoy life the way you used to.

If any of these resonate with you, therapy can help. Together, we can work through the thoughts and emotions that are holding you back and develop ways to regain control over your mind and body.

Sessions and Fees

  • Individual therapy sessions: £85 per session
  • Health insurance accepted: Aviva and AXA Health

Sessions are available both online and in-person, making therapy accessible and flexible to suit your needs.

Taking the First Step

Making the decision to start therapy is a big step, and it’s okay if you’re feeling unsure. What’s important is that you don’t have to go through this alone. Therapy is not about “fixing” you – because you are not broken. It is about understanding yourself, processing your experiences, and finding the tools you need to move forward.

You already have the strength within you. My role is to help you unlock it.

If you’re ready to take that first step, or even if you just want to ask a few questions to see if therapy is right for you, get in touch.
